Chombo says Gukurahundi a non-issue concerning the issuing of identification documents to children whose parents were killed

Responding to a question in Parliament yesterday, Home Affairs minister Ignatius Chombo said Gukurahundi was a non-issue when it comes to the issuance of birth certificates and other identification documents to children whose parents were killed during that era.

Chombo was responding to Thokozani Khupe’s question on how people from Matabeleland and Midlands provinces, who are struggling to obtain identification documents after their parents were killed during the Gukurahundi era would be assisted. Said Chombo:

Firstly, let me say that the issue of Gukurahundi does not arise in this particular issue, it is a non-issue.

Chombo was then asked to clarify the context of his statement after opposition MPs started singing and demanded him to withdraw his statement.  He went on to clarify that one can bring a relatives or anybody who knows them to testify so that they can get an identification document.
