Mashonaland East Minister blames theft of inputs for Command Agric failure

Addressing a provincial “all stakeholders” meeting in Marondera last Wednesday, Mashonaland East resident minister, Ambrose Mutinhiri, admitted that his province will fail to meet its targeted harvest under the command agriculture programme due to abuse of State provided inputs.|

He said the province failed to grow 75,000 hectares of land and blamed theft of inputs by some of the farmers as the major reason. Said Mutinhiri:

The programme fell short of reaching the set target of 75,000 ha. However, the 44,570 ha achieved in Mashonaland East will ensure we get a bumper harvest. Let us all pick our lessons and embrace this initiative and guard against abuse of inputs in order to carry the momentum into the next phase.

Mutinhiri’s admission comes amid reports that senior government and Zanu PF officials in the province had blocked staff from the ministry of agriculture from carrying out audits on how they had used their inputs which included seed, fertiliser, chemicals and fuel.
