MDC-T employees reportedly stage demo after party fails to pay their salaries for 17 months

The Herald reports that about 62 MDC-T employees staged a demonstration at the party’s headquarters in Harare after going 17 months without being paid.

However, MDC-T secretary general Mr Douglas Mwonzora confirmed that the party owes some of its employees salaries but denied that there were demonstrations on Wednesday. He also denied that the party had failed to pay workers for 17 months and blamed their arrears on Government which avails the grant late. Said Mwonzora:

It’s an exaggeration that we haven’t been paying them for the past 17 months. We have been paying them. Yes, we are in arrears just like The Herald, just like Zanu-PF and just like Parirenyatwa. We do owe our workers in arrears in differing amounts. We are in arrears because the Government grant does not come on time.

A source who spoke to The Herald said that employees were first addressed by National Chairperson Mr Lovemore Moyo and his deputy Mr Morgan Komichi but demanded to be addressed by Mwonzora who later engaged only the top three leadership representatives from the worker’s committee. The workers later besieged Mwonzora’s office. The workers who were sitting on the floor in protest accused Mwonzora of trying to hoodwink the committee leadership.
