Sulu fails to pay maintenance, says maintenance judgement was too harsh

Dendera musician Sulumani Chimbetu was arrested after failing to pay maintenance for the months of January and February, leaving him with arrears of $1 600. Sulu as the musician is affectionately known pleaded not guilty when he appeared before magistrate Joy Chikodzore charged with failure to pay maintenance. The magistrate granted him free bail and told him to return on 30 March for trial.

In his warned and cautioned statement Sulu, pleaded:

I did not pay the maintenance because I feel the judgment which was granted by the court in the case is a bit harsh considering the economic situation and the nature of my job.

Hence I made an appeal against the judgment which is still pending at court.

I had to borrow US$800 from a companion so that I could settle the first instalment for the month of December 2016 and I am still to pay back that amount.

Now that there is another warrant, I am not able to go and borrow again to settle these amounts.
