Kasukuwere says govt wont allow Moto Republik's closure

Moto Republik is still standing! Thank you for the overwhelming support to #SaveMotoRepublik and signing our petition which received over 1,800 signatures in less than 7 days. Your 15 000 tweets plus the petition got a positive response from Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere who made a courtesy call and visited Moto Republik. Minister Kasukuwere said “Govt won’t allow its closure. Important center that is for youth empowerment and creativity. Engage and correct whatever needs correcting.” Yesterday the Mayor of Harare said “NO demolition today. (..) Hoping for a sober, well-considered outcome amid the storm.”

Moto Republik would like to reiterate that regularisation was paid and building plans were approved by city council well before any official enforcement letters were received. On top of this the council’s attempt to demolish Moto republik structures is illegal and by law is required to have a court order to do so. Moto Republik has engaged its lawyers to resolve the dispute with The City of Harare as well as to seek reparations for damages made to its structure. The matter is now before the High Court in Harare and scheduled for a hearing next week.

However we are hoping for an amicable resolution to the matter with the city council and wish to reaffirm our position that Moto Republik is a space for young people in Zimbabwe and is a significant contribution to the development of our capital city. We are committed to finding common ground with council. Demolition is not a solution.
