It is illegal for police to impound vehicles at roadblocks says Chombo

Responding to questions during a Press conference in Harare yesterday, Home Affairs minister Ignatius Chombo said that it is illegal for police officers to impound vehicles at roadblocks to force motorists to pay spot fines adding that if caught, the traffic police officers will be dealt with.

Chombo said that those that were impounding vehicles were abusing their authority. Said Chombo:

No car should be impounded. Those cases might occur here and there, but it’s really not the norm. That is why I said there are also some bad apples within the police traffic enforcement system and if we know the details, I really assure you that they will be dealt with.

Chombo also said that Government was introducing a number of initiatives to do away with numerous roadblocks.
