Police deny giving war veterans green light to hold meeting in Harare
In a statement Assistant Inspector Taurai Dube denied claims by the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) that the police had granted them the green light to hold a meeting in Harare. She said that the war veterans had to comply with the provisions of the Public Order and Safety Act (POSA) before they are granted permission.
Part of the statement by Dube reads:
The police want to make it very clear that they did not “OKAY” the war vets indaba as alleged. The applicant has to comply with the law as enshrined in the Public Order and Safety Act (POSA) Chapter 11:17. Any gathering without compliance to the provisions of the law will be deemed unlawful.
FeedbackZNLWA spokesperson Mr Douglas Mahiya was quoted yesterday by the NewsDay saying that police had given them the green light to conduct their meeting in Harare where Zanu PF and Government officials were expected to attend. However yesterday when asked by The Herald he said that if the police had issued a statement it meant that they had denied their request as the regulating authority.
