Human rights defender Linda Masarira sentenced to 18 months, effective sentence 385 hours of community service

Activist Linda Masarira has been sentenced to  18 months imprisonment. Seven months were suspended on condition she does does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.  The other eleven months were suspended on condition that she performs 385 hours of community service.   The community service is scheduled to start tomorrow and will be done at  Malborough Clinic.  Last week on Friday, Masarira was found guilty of on charges of fanning public violence during the July 6, 2016 ‘‘stay away’’ protest movement led by #This Flag Movement founder Pastor Evan Mawarire.

Masarira was supposed to be sentenced yesterday by Magistrate Mbanje said that he needed, more time to go through submissions by both the defence and the state. The state had argued against a fine only saying it would trivialise the matter while the defence countered saying that Masarira was a window who had 5 kids who depended on her for survival. The defence also argued that Masarira needed medical care and giving her community service would compromise her ability to raise the money needed for the fine.
