Doctors call off three week strike citing the plight of patients

The Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) called off a crippling three-week strike on Sunday, citing the “plight of patients.” The government has also agreed to part of the doctor’s demands. The doctors have been on strike since the 15th of February 2017.

The government offered the following conditions:

  1. On-call allowances have been increased to $320 instead of the $720 the doctors had been asking for.
  2. The government agreed to a new car loan package.
  3. The government created 250 new posts for doctors with immediate effect.

In a statement the ZHDA said:

The ball is now in government court to deliver on promises and improve on doctors’ conditions of service, failing which, as the ZHDA we remain resolute that we will take decisive action to defend the best interests of the health profession in Zimbabwe.
