Beat up debt collectors to prevent them from robbing you, we will defend you: Madhuku to residents

University of Zimbabwe law Lecturer Professor Lovemore Madhuku has urged Harare residents to protect their property to avoid being robbed by debt collectors. Madhuku emphasised that only the police and messengers of the courts were authorised by the law to recover debt on behalf of public institutions. He also pilloried the City of Harare for using private debt collectors saying that the local authorities should follow proper legal channels, which includes applying for court orders to recover debts from defaulters.

Speaking at a Harare residents’ public meeting Madhuku said:

What I am urging you, is that, make it very difficult for the so called debt collectors to rob you because they are not allowed by law to do so. In fact beat them up and we will meet them in court if they then decide to report you, because if you allow them to take your properties ,tomorrow any one will come claiming that he had been sent to collect money from you by the Harare City Council.
