Illegal Settlers threaten timber imdustry

Illegal settlers have invaded the Chimannimani district of eastern Zimbabwe, destroying vast areas of timber in the process. Many trees have been lost to forest fires started by the settlers who have reportedly invaded at least 20 000 hectares. The future of the industry is at risk as the bulk of Zimbabwe’s timber comes from the eastern highlands.

Darlington Duwa, CEO of the Timber Producers Federation said:

Most of the timber plantations (in Manicaland) are occupied (by illegal settlers)

It is no exaggeration that unless the situation is addressed, the future of the timber industry in Manicaland is bleak

Some of the affected companies include Allied Timbers Zimbabwe, Border Timbers, and Wattle Company.

Duwa warned that the issue needs to be dealt with quickly as the country is facing a huge shortage of foreign currency, and imports can go a long way in alleviating that, saying:

The issue of illegal settlers is taking too long to address. The time when the nation will solely rely on timber imports is fast approaching, let us all join our hands to prevent this from happening,
