Parirenyatwa says Zimbabwe needs $1,3 billion annually for health, allocated $282 m

Minister of Health and Child Care David Parirenyatwa told senators that Zimbabwe requires $1,3 billion annually for heath services. He said the money was required drugs, infrastructure, equipment and salaries. He bemoaned the paltry amounts that are always to the health in the budget.

In the National Budget for 2017, Finance Minister allocated $281 976 000 to the ministry of health. While this presents a huge shortfall, it should also be noted that the total budget was $4, 1 billion. The money allocated to the health ministry was just 6,88 percent of the total budget.

Addressing Senator in the Upper House, Parirenyatwa said:

We once reached a stage where we gathered together with experts in the Ministry to see what will be the required amount for the Ministry per year and what the cost of health care per year is in the public sector in Zimbabwe and we came up with a figure of $1.3 billion annually.

…Whether the money is there or not but this is the figure that is required. Zimbabwe needs to know about it.

We require $1.3 billion per year which helps us with infrastructure, equipment, staffing and drugs. That is what the health system of Zimbabwe requires.

Parirenyatwa appealed to the senators to allocate more money to his ministry in order to save lives.

A lot of people are dying because they go and seek attention from hospitals and are not able to accept it. I urge this august Senate to give us more in terms of budget allocation.
