New curriculum for Ordinary Level, 7 compulsory subjects, 10 standard,  maximum number capped at 12

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Dr Lazarus Dokora introduced a New Education Curriculum for Ordinary Level.  The number of compulsory subjects has been set at 7 and the standard number of subjects has been set at 10.    The new curriculum also sets a maximum of 2  more subjects for those who wished to pursue more.  Meaning that the maximum number of subjects is 12.

According to the new curriculum,  the 7 compulsory subjects are:

  1. Agriculture
  2. Physical Education and Sport and Mass Display
  3. General Science
  4. Mathematics
  5. Indigenous Languages
  6. English Language
  7. Heritage Studies

After these 7 compulsory languages,  students will be allowed to choose three more elective subjects. Those students who wish to increase the number of subjects will be allowed to add an additional 2 subjects, meaning they will be choosing 5 subjects.

The Elective Subjects are:

  • Computer Science
  • Geography
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Additional Mathematics
  • Pure Mathematics
  • Statistics
  • History
  • Sociology
  • Economic History
  • Family and Religious Studies.

The new curriculum came into full effect this term, with emphasis being put on strengthening Mathematics, Science, Technology, Vocational studies, Humanities and Heritage studies that would be made compulsory at all level.
