Up to 1 year in prison for breeding chickens at home: Harare City Council

Harare City Council (HCC) wants to curb the number of chickens that can be kept on people’s properties.  The number of chickens will depend on the size of the property.  HCC wants to introduce the Harare (Public Health) (Amendment) by-laws 2016.    The proposed by-laws state that

  • High-density suburbs will be limited to a maximum of 25 chickens.
  • Properties with a range from 300 to 900 square metres will be limited to a maximum of 100 chickens.
  • Properties with a range from 900 to 2000 square metres will be limited to a maximum of 405 chickens.
  • Properties measuring more than 2000 square metres will be limited to a maximum of 800 chickens.

According to the proposed by-laws, failing to comply with the by-laws or knowingly giving false information will result in a penalty not exceeding one year in prison or not exceeding level 5.
