Harare Mayor says "bond" leadership will not make capital world class
Speaking at the end of the year Meet the Mayor public meeting on Wednesday evening, Harare Mayor, Bernard Manyenyeni, said a world class city by 2025 will not be attainable in a “bond note” economy.
Said Manyenyeni:
The world class city must be a complete composite arrangement including a world class government. You must ask yourself and answer the question: can a government led by President Robert Mugabe be termed or described as a world class government? And if you can have an answer, it is part of the answer to whether Harare can be a world class city. You need to ask that same question at ministerial level: is the minister of local government a world class minister? Can he survive and operate the way he does in a world class city elsewhere? You need also to ask: is the Mayor we have in Harare a world class Mayor? Can he survive in Cape Town, or in Lusaka? You need to be saying we need the rightful leadership to have a world class city. If we have a bond Mayor we won’t be able to reach a world class target.
FeedbackThe mayor’s comments come after the introduction of bond notes into the market on Monday.
