Teacher sentenced to 12 months in jail for grabbing police officer by the collar

Eddy Ruzive, 45, who is a primary school teacher from Silobela, was sentenced to 12 months in jail by Gweru magistrate Musaiona Shotgame after after being convicted on assault charges. Shotgame suspended half of the sentence on condition of good behaviour.

Ruzive allegedly grabbed a police officer, Robert Butsa, by his collar accusing him of stealing money from the public before he was restrained by members of the public. In his defence, Ruzive said he was drunk to the extent that he failed to control himself and could not even remember what happened on the day. However, magistrate Shotgame said being drunk was no justification for breaking the law.
