Pastor Evan Mawarire reveals he left because suspected state security agents were targeting his family

During a presentation at Harvard University Pastor Evan Mawarire revealed the main reason why he left Zimbabwe for the United States.

He revealed that he was taken out of his cell when he was incarcerated and threatened that his wife would have been raped. Mawarire revealed that his two older children had been visited at their preschool. He said,

…I was called out of my cell at about one in the morning, taken into a room where two men continued for an hour, to threaten me. One of the threats they leveled against me, they said, “No one knows, not even your lawyer knows we have pulled you out of the cell and brought you here to talk to you. In that same way, you don’t know and nobody knows if someone is going to your house tonight and your wife could get raped”. At my children’s school, one of the teachers at the school, actually informed my wife, men had come to the school wanting to see my children. This is a five year old and three year old. Wanting to see them. Why do you wanna see a five year old and three year old for? So I was not prepared for my family to become victims concerning this and that was one of the reasons I left…
