Former vice-president and leader of the opposition National People’s Party Joice Mujuru will be launching night rallies, also known as pungwes as she tries to drum up support for her 2018 presidential bid. The pungwes date back to the Second Chimurenga freedom fighters used to interact with and mobilise the rural population. NPP secretary-general Gift Nyandoro said:
<blockquote>It is a roller-coaster programme that is done on a daily basis. The aim is for the president to address every single of the 1 958 wards in Zimbabwe before 2018 elections.
Among other important messages is that she is encouraging Zimbabweans to register in the voter registration exercise and to avoid voter apathy because Zimbabweans owe it to themselves to liberate the country from Mugabe hegemony. Remember she is a guerrilla and a war vet.</blockquote>

Joice Mujuru to hold 'pungwe' rallies as she campaigns for 2018 elections

Opposition parties have criticised President Mugabe for going to New York to attend a summit on oceans since Zimbabwe is landlocked. The opposition decried the cost of the trip as the president travelled with a delegation of at least 50 people, saying that the money could have been better used considering the problems that the country is facing.
MDC-T spokesperson, Obert Gutu said:
<blockquote>He has totally lost the plot and closed his heart to the country and people. Zimbabwe needs to be liberated from this dictator. The only solution available to Zimbabweans is an irreversible removal of Mugabe from power. Even those in Zanu PF need to be liberated from the yoke of their leader’s tyranny,” he said. “We know it is about the per diems for Mugabe’s staffers and the looting continues.</blockquote>
While National People’s Party spokesperson, Gift Nyandoro added:
<blockquote>This reflects Zanu PF’s skewed priorities and the continued misuse of our country’s resources given that our country is landlocked. Surely, of what substance and contribution can Zimbabwe make to an oceans summit when the government is failing to address basic needs of the people? The country’s infrastructure is a crying shame, our people are sleeping in bank queues and our health delivery system is dead. Clearly, this visit is another of Mugabe’s ploys to loot the national purse.</blockquote>
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) spokesperson, Jacob Mafume also said:
<blockquote>Unless we want to annex a neighbouring country and administer its oceans, then what are we doing there. Maybe, Mugabe got confused when he officially opened Tokwe Mukosi Dam. He probably thought that Zimbabwe had built an ocean against the wishes of the imperialists.
Scarce foreign currency is being used on these trips to the detriment of the nation has not benefitted the nation nor will it benefit the nation. The fascination with meetings and conferences is of infantile proportions.</blockquote>

Mugabe criticised for attending UN conference on oceans and seas

National People’s Party (NPP) leader Joice Mujuru has through her spokesperson Gift Nyandoro, dismissed recent comments by Samuel Sipepa Nkomo that Morgan Tsvangirai is a failed politician. She also pledged her commitment to the coalition with Tsvangirai.
Said Nyandoro:
<blockquote>Any assumption or suggestion that Dr Mujuru could quit or dump coalition talks is far divorced from reality. She remains committed to the coalition discourse and the grand 2018 projection that democracy should return to the country. The diverse political posturing that may appear as conflicting statements by members across the divide is a clear reflection of the robust and healthy discourse of super democrats. It is reflective of individual preferences and not of the institutions</blockquote>
When asked by NewsDay for a comment Nkomo denied that he said that Tsvangirai is a failure. Tsvangirai’s spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka, denied to comment when asked if they were still negotiating with Mujuru following Nkomo’s remarks.

Mujuru dismisses Nkomo's comments that Tsvangirai's a failure, pledges commitment to coalition

Jealousy Mawarire has revealed that he was called in by police yesterday (Wednesday 5 April) to record his statement following a nasty brawl with Gift Nyandoro who is the spokesperson for National People’s Party leader Joice Mujuru. He also said that Nyandoro is also wanted for assaulting him.
Asked by a Twitter user why he was not arrested for assaulting Nyandoro, Mawarire replied:

Jealousy Mawarire called in by police after assaulting Gift Nyandoro

Jealousy Mawarire has announced that he has handed in his resignation letter to the Joice Mujuru led National People’s Party. Mawarire’s resignation comes after he was involved in a nasty brawl with Mujuru’s spokesperson Gift Nyandoro over policy issues.
The letter reads:
<blockquote>Dear Madam 
REF: RESIGNATION FROM NATIONAL PEOPLE’S PARTY 
I write to inform you that I am resigning from my position as National People’s Party Spokesperson, as a National Member representing Harare Province and from being a card-carrying member of the party.
I have made this decision after thorough reflection on events happening in the party. especially the unruly behaviour exhibited by your Spokesperson,. Mr Gift Nyandoro, whom you are aware has been showing thuggish behaviour even during National Executive Committee meetings that you chaired wherein he has threatened fellow national members with physical harm or “taking them to the satanic realm”, whatever that means.
That such behaviour hasn’t been condemned even when it happened in your full view during meetings that you chaired was, to me, bad and when the same Nyana’oro carried his thuggish behaviour to the extent of pushing my wife who had come to inquire why he was being abrasive towards me when he followed me to Bronte Hotel where I was attending ai ZESNI-EU workshop took away the little respect I had for him and your office that I thought he represented.
The malice that he showed after the altercation at Bronte and the melodrama he created on the issue made me realise I wasn’t just dealing with a thug but with a dishonest character that I would not love to work with.
You are aware, as I have communicated before, that your spokesperson, with the help of equally thuggish two members of the party from Harare Province, has hired thugs to trail and harm me hence I see no point really to engage, every day, in fighting thugs rather than the oppressive Zanu-PF regime.
I therefore believe, as I have told you before, that while I believe in your ability to steer this country from the mess it is in, I don’t believe the thugs that have taken over important positions in the party will take you anywhere.
I however, believe, in your Zimbabwe has the best leader to end the economic rot that Mugabe and his cronies have visited on our great nation_ The ball is in your court, at the best level and with the right kind of racquet, the necessary technique swing and power; you can smash in a wonderful victory at the polls in 2018.
Thank you for the wonderful opportunity you gave me to serve under you, to defend what I know is right and for projecting the real Joice Mujuru that I know you are. You have shown me the real Mother Zimbabwe that you are and I honestly believe you have the capacity to “Make Zimbabwe a First World County the dream and wish that you told me you had, long before Donald Trump spoke about “Making America Great Again”.
I will be addressing the media to afford these key stakeholders a chance to hear my story and to thank them for a wonderful working relationship, for the support and constructive criticism they have so lovingly extended to me. They have helped me grow into the politician that I am today.
I wish you all the best in life and, most importantly, victory in 2018 when you take on Zanu-PF at the polls.

Jealousy Mawarire resigns from Mujuru's party following fight with Nyandoro

Joice Mujuru’s National People’s Party (NPP) is set to punish its two senior officials Jealousy Mawarire and Gift Nyandoro, who engaged in a physical public fight at the Bronte Hotel in Harare over policy differences on Thursday.
Speaking to NewsDay, incoming NPP vice-president Samuel Sipepa Nkomo yesterday said:
<blockquote>Every institution has rules and I believe generally that if rules are broken there should be consequences. I have not spoken to the two, but I hope the party will sit down and hear from them what really transpired. Even churches have rules and the NPP has rules and I am sure they would be applied after hearing both sides.</blockquote>

Video: Mujuru's spokesperson narrates physical fight with party spokesperson Jealousy Mawarire

Earlier on today (Thursday) National People’s Party spokesperson Jealousy Mawarire and Joice Mujuru’s presidential spokesperson, Gift Nyandaro were involved in a physical altercation. It is reported that Nyandoro was briefly hospitalised after the fight.
Mr Nyandoro told journalists that he was confronted by Mr Mawarire at Bronte hotel where things gout out of hand after an argument ensued over coalition talks.
The issues between the two may have been brought to the fore after Gift Nyandaro told Newsday that Mawarire was expressing his personal opinion with regards to the proposed grand coalition. Mawarire had been critical of the announcement by Didymus Mutasa that Morgan Tsvangirai should lead the coalition. <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/news/2017/03/30/confusion-joice-mujurucamp-spokespersons-issue-conflicting-statements/" target="_blank">Mawarire responded by releasing a statement saying that Nyandoro does not speak for the National People’s Party.</a>

Updated: NPP spokesperson Mawarire and Mujuru spokesperson Gift Nyandaro in physical fight

There seems to be some miscommunication in former Vice President Joice Mujuru’s National People’s Party between the two spokespersons. Party spokesperson Jealousy Mawarire has released a statement saying Mujuru’s spokesperson Gift Nyandoro does not speak for the party.
Here is the statement:
<blockquote>Mr Gift Nyandoro does not speak on behalf of NPP
We would like to draw your attention to statements made by Mr Gift Nyandoro in today’s edition of the Newsday under the headline “Mujuru committed to coalition” where Nyandoro is purporting to speak on behalf of the National People’s Party. It should be noted that Mr Nyandoro is President Joice Mujuru’s spokesperson and his duties do not include speaking on behalf of the party. Although, as a senior party member Mr Nyandoro is aware of the party position on different issues, his brief as Presidential Spokesperson does not include speaking on behalf of the party.
 The National People’s Party as we have previously stated, is committed to working with all democratic parties but would not be dragged into joining the Mugabe initiated and Didymus Mutasa broadcasted, coalition leader endorsement mantra which seeks to anoint a leader outside a proper, democratic and people- driven process. 
We are a People’s Party; therefore our people have to been afforded their constitutional right to choose the leader they want to represent them. We believe that coalition partners will come up with an agreed position or strategy that they would use to choose the leader of the coalition and as a party, we are prepared to support any leader who comes out of such a process. We urge our members and our media partners to ignore unofficial statements by party officials who are not mandated to speak on behalf of the party. We are the future, we have the solution.

Confusion in Joice Mujuru's camp as spokespersons issue conflicting statements

National People’s Party top officials were involved in a violent public fight reportedly over policy inconsistency.
Joice Mujuru’s spokesperson and incoming party secretary general Gift Nyandoro, was reportedly left with a fractured leg following an alleged beating at the hands of party spokesperson Jealousy Mawarire. Nyandoro confirmed the incident to NewsDay.
