Malvern Chimutashu, a Harare businessman, has been arrested for obstruction of justice in the ongoing Zimdef scandal. Chimutashu is accused of unlawfully interfering with state witness Walter Chasara in an attempt to save Deputy Minister of Higher Education Godfrey Gandawa.
It is alleged that Chimutashu attempted to entice Chasara to retract his fraud complaint and to sign a new affidavit stating that he had been forced to make the original complaint. In exchange, Chasara would get an unspecified amount of money. However, Chasara reported the matter to ZACC who arrested Chimutashu. Gandawa’s boss Professor Jonathan Moyo is also facing charges of corruption and misuse of funds from Zimdef.
Chimutashu is out on bail and wll be back in court on January 16.
