Protesters file $17 000 lawsuit against Chihuri for illegal detention, after protesting Mphoko hotel stay

Four protestors have sued Police Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri for illegal detention.  The four are demanding $17 000, after being illegally detained for 40 hours for protesting against Vice President Phelekezela  Mphoko‘s continued stay in Rainbow Towers Hotel.

The four activists are Lynette Mudewe, Dirk Frey, Alvin Takavada and Elvis Mugari.  They are being represented by Advocate David Hofisi of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.

Speaking to New Zimbabwe Mudewe said:

It is unfortunate that the state arrests innocent citizens who will be exercising their constitutional rights at the expense of criminals who are masquerading as senior civil servants occupying public offices and stealing public funds,

What we were doing on the day in question was not criminal, in fact we were protesting against the Vice President who was stealing public funds through staying in a luxurious hotel while refusing to occupy decent government accommodation meant for his office
