Former MDC legislator and Minister for Education, Sports, Arts and Culture David Coltart said that the arrest of MDC Alliance MP, Joanna Mamombe (25) on treason allegations shows that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government is similar to Mugabe’s worst years. Said Coltart:
This petrified regime sees a “communist under every bush”. The arrest and detention this weekend of Zimbabwe’s youngest MP on spurious charges is yet another outrage. The Mnangagwa regime is no different from the worst of the Mugabe years.
It is ironic that the person who himself came to power through an illegal, unconstitutional coup in Zimbabwe is now so unsettled that he thinks that everyone, including our youngest MP, is committed to using the same illegal means he did to gain power.
Robert Mugabe was the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987 and became executive President from that year until 2017 when he was pushed out of office.
