Junior Doctors Reject Latest Govt Offer Brokered By Apex Council, Vow To Continue With Strike

In yet another twist to the government-doctors’ talks to end the strike which started on December 1, the doctors have rejected the latest deal that had been put on the table by the government.

Government representatives met with the Apex Council, the umbrella body that represents all government workers and came up with a deal to end the doctors’ strike.

In an interview with The Standard, Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors’ Association (ZHDA) secretary-general Mthabisi Bhebhe rejected state media reports that the doctors have agreed to return to work. Said Bhebhe

The person who signed the deal is only an Apex representative. He does not speak on behalf of the doctors. We refused to counter-sign the agreement because we do not agree with a number of issues contained in the so-called agreement. In short, the strike is still on. It is unfortunate that the government wants to play to the gallery with facts.
