Mugabe’s Son-In-Law Simba Chikore Granted $30 Bail On Kidnapping Charge

Former President Robert Mugabe’s son-in-law Simba Chikore was granted $30 bail by Harare Magistrate Elisha Singano on Tuesday.  Chikore was arrested on Monday night at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. However, he did not spend the night in the police cells as he was released into the custody of his lawyer, Jonathan Samkange.  He was charged with kidnapping after he allegedly forcibly detained Zimbabwe Airways employee Bertha Zakeyo following a heated argument. The magistrate ruled that there was no compelling evidence to deny Chikore bail and ordered him to continue residing at his address and not to interfere with the state’s witnesses.  The matter was postponed to the 7th of November.

Zakeyo has accused Chikore of kidnapping her, claiming that he had held her hostage in the office for nearly two hours against her will  and also denied her access to her lawyer, Phillipa Jones. She said this happened after she received a letter from Chikore demanding that she writes a report which included allegedly holding unsanctioned meetings.
