Harare High Court judge Justice Lavender Makoni on Tuesday withheld judgement in a case in which vice president, General Constantino Chiwenga is demanding $5 million from Professor Jonathan Moyo. Justice Makoni reserved judgement to consider the arguments to decide whether the matter should be referred for trial. Chiwenga sued Moyo for defamation after the former minister threatened to reveal the alleged true author of the General’s PhD thesis for KwaZulu Natal University in South Africa. However, Moyo through his lawyer Chris Mhike of Atherstone & Cook filed an application for exception to the suit.
Mhike said the case should be dismissed because the lawsuit is vague and embarrassing and that the dispute was a war of words between politicians. Part of the offending statement reads,
Finally, I’m happy that Chiwenga wants pre and post-independence disclosures about who was who, who did what and so forth. That’s good.
“Meanwhile, I take that to mean he wants the disclosure of who contributed what to his doctorate and who really wrote his KZN PhD. Again, the Shona wisdom that kunyarara kurinani pane kutaura, applies. #Handeitione.
Chiwenga, on the other hand, contends that his reputation was damaged by the statement.
