The government through the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has reiterated that parents are not forced to purchase school uniforms at their children’s schools. The government said that the parents are free to purchase the uniforms wherever, they may find them at a cheaper price. This follows reports of some schools forcing parents to purchase uniforms at their schools saying that they are unavailable elsewhere. However, such uniforms are usually priced exorbitantly.
In a press statement, Dr S.J. Utete- Masango, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, said
Following the of the release of the November 2017 2IMSEC Ordinary Level results, the Ministry would like to inform the nation of its valued stakeholders that Lower Six learners started School 5 March 2018.
Pursuant to public pronouncement by the Permanent Secretary Dr S.J. Utete- Masango on 9 January 2018. I want to reiterate once more that parents/guardians are free to purchase uniforms wherever they find it cheaper in line with the specifications by the schools. Therefore, the Ministry’s positions with regards to purchase of uniforms remains unchanged.
In most schools, the proceeds from the sale of uniforms is used to support school budgets and, projects such as:
• Repair of school equipment and furniture
• Aiding construction work
• Purchase of school textbooks
• Subsidising boarding requirements
• Purchase of sporting equipment
• Purchase of teaching and learning materials
