Avowed supporter of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, businessman and activist Energy Mutodi is now a free man after Harare Magistrate Rumbidzayi Mugwagwa removed him from remand. The state did not oppose Mutodi’s application for refusal of further remand. Mutodi was facing charges of causing disaffection in the defence forces and insulting former president Robert Mugabe as well as communicating false statements after he alleged that Health minister David Parirenyatwa and former Defence minister Sydney Sekeramayi were the main suspects in the poisoning of then Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa last year.
The first two charges stem from a Facebook post-Mutodi had written in which he suggested that a military coup was likely if then President Robert Mugabe was not careful in choosing his successor. Mugabe was later pushed out after a military intervention by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces in November after he had fired Mnangagwa.
Mugwagwa refused further remand on all the three cases and Mutodi is now a free man.
