Legislators started celebrating wildly during the Impeachment process at the Harare International Conference Centre after the speaker of Parliament, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, had said that he had received a notice of resignation from President Robert Mugabe. The notice came during a joint sitting of the House of Assembly and the Senate to impeach President Robert Gabriel.
As Mudenda was presiding over the impeachment, Justice Minister Happyton Bonyongwe interrupted him, carrying a letter. Speaker Mudenda then asked the MPs to excuse him before announcing that the letter had come.
Mudenda said that he had an announcement to make, before going on to read:
My decision to resign is voluntary on my party and arises from my concern for the welfare of people in Zimbabwe and my desires to see a smooth, peaceful and non-violent transfer of power.Kindly give public notice of my resignation as soon as possible as required by the constitution.
Yours faithfully, Mugabe
