Former director-general of the Central Intelligence Organisation and the new minister of justice Retired Major-General Happyton Bonyongwe has said that his ministry is working on an amendment to give life sentences to rapists of minor children. He also said that a draft bill against child marriages would be tabled before Parliament soon. He also said that those who rape adults and elderly people should be incarcerated for a minimum of 40 years.
Speaking in Beitbridge, the former spymaster said:
The government is doing its best to protect the girl child in the wake of these disturbing trends. We have an amendment proposal seeking to have life sentences imposed on people convicted of raping minors.
