Taxi Driver Steals US$680 Hidden In Female Passenger’s Underwear

A daring taxi driver allegedly stole US$680 hidden in a woman’s underwear after diverting from the expected route in Kwekwe.

The incident, confirmed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), took place on the evening of 21 May 2025.

On that day, the victim boarded a taxi, an AD Van, driven by the accused, Tatenda Munyanyi. She was the sole passenger and took a seat in the back. The NPA said:

Upon reaching the Amaveni traffic circle, the offender diverted from the expected route and drove towards Silobela Road, eventually branching into the bush where he parked the vehicle.

The offender then grabbed the victim’s collar, demanding cash and her cellphone. She resisted and jumped out of the vehicle and the offender followed, restrained her and threatened to rape her.

The offender bit her hand and took USD $680 concealed in her underwear.

The victim escaped and ran to the main road where she stopped a passing car with two male occupants to whom she explained what had happened.

According to the NPA, two men intercepted Munyayi’s vehicle and disabled it by shooting its wheels, prompting him to flee on foot.

On 22 May 2025, detectives recovered Munyanyi’s cellphone and a deposit fine slip (Z691 number 0161479) bearing his name from the abandoned vehicle, leading to his arrest.

He later appeared in court, where he was sentenced to four years in prison. Six months were suspended for five years, with an additional six months suspended on the condition that he restitutes US$680.00, leaving him to serve an effective three-year term.
