Top Army General’s Wife Leads Kudakwashe Tagwirei’s Campaign

The wife of Presidential Guard Commander Brigadier General Fidelis Mhonda is reported to have played a key role in organising businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei’s land tenure event in Masvingo last Friday, an event widely seen as the soft launch of his political ambitions.

Nyasha Mhonda was present at the gathering, wearing a beret emblazoned with “ED,” the initials of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. 

According to ZimLive sources, she was the chief organiser, handling invitations and other logistical arrangements.

The event has further fuelled speculation about Tagwirei’s rumoured bid to succeed Mnangagwa, allegedly with the president’s blessing, by sidelining Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. 

While Tagwirei has not publicly declared any political ambitions, his involvement in ZANU PF affairs has been growing.

His political entry was first signalled in March when ZANU PF provincial executives in Masvingo and Harare called for his inclusion in the party’s central committee.

Adding to the intrigue, outspoken war veteran Blessed Runesu Geza recently alleged that Tagwirei is paying Brigadier General Mhonda US$25,000 per month for protection. 

The claim, coupled with his wife’s role in the Masvingo event, is likely to intensify debate over Tagwirei’s place in ZANU PF’s succession politics.

The event itself, dubbed the Land Tenure Implementation Leadership Success Series Programme, was framed as a youth empowerment initiative focused on land utilisation and agricultural productivity. Tagwirei said the programme would be rolled out across the country.

It is being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Information Communication Technology, led by Minister Tatenda Mavetera.

Among those in attendance were Masvingo Minister of State Ezra Chadzamira, Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services Commissioner-General Stanley Kondongwe, ZANU PF Masvingo chairperson Rabison Mavhenyengwa and his deputy Trust Mugabe.

Tagwirei, who heads the newly formed Land Tenure Implementation Committee, said the government’s plan to issue title deeds to resettled farmers was a bold step toward economic empowerment. 

However, the initiative has drawn criticism from war veterans who see it as a possible reversal of the land reform programme.
