Truck Driver Flees After Horror Crash Claims Two On Harare–Mutare Road

Two passengers died on the spot and another was seriously injured in a tragic road accident involving a Hino truck along the Harare–Mutare Road on 9 May 2025.

The crash occurred at the 136-kilometre peg when the Hino truck, carrying three passengers, was sideswiped by another truck attempting to overtake. The overtaking vehicle did not stop after the collision and fled the scene.

As a result of the impact, the Hino truck veered off the road and overturned, landing on its left side. The two deceased passengers, who had been seated in the truck’s loading box, were fatally struck by a tobacco bailing box inside the vehicle before being thrown out. The third passenger sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the identities of the deceased as Tapera Macheka of Nyanhanga Village B, Headlands, and Sabstin Mupfumi of Village 19 A Mugadza, also of Headlands.

In the wake of the fatal crash, the ZRP has once again urged motorists to adhere strictly to road rules and regulations.

Commissioner Nyathi pleaded for safe and responsible overtaking, saying reckless driving continues to cost lives on Zimbabwe’s highways.
