Inmates get 10 years each, for killing cellmate who did not want to escape

Wellington Gadzira (46) and Moses Pedzisai Mahuvava (38) were each sentenced to 10 years in prison after they killed Abel Maphosa (then 56) for refusing to break out of prison with them. The duo together with Johannes Nyasha Masiiwa (32) killed Maphosa at Wha Wha Medium Prison in Gweru.

Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Martin Makonese convicted the two of culpable homicide on Wednesday after they blamed Masiiwa who is currently in a mental institution

Ruled Justice Makonese:

It is common cause that the accused planned with Masiiwa to break from the prison and the deceased was murdered for refusing to go along with the plan,

However, the accused persons are putting the blame on Masiiwa who is in a mental institution and there is no evidence to the contrary.

The accused are sentenced to 10 years in prison each.
