145 Civilians & 11 Security Forces Die In Ethiopian Protests As Ethiopians Protest The Murder Of A Popular Musician

156 people have died in Ethiopia during a riot as they were protesting after a popular singer 34-year-old Hachalu Hundessa was gunned down in Addis Ababa by unidentified gunmen while he was driving, CGTN reports.

Hundessa’s death sparked protests in Addis Ababa and Oromia region where he came from which lead to riots which subsequently led to the death of 156 people including 11 Security forces agents.

According to the publication:

About 2,200 people were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the riots, government sources said, adding that the protests and riots had been under control as of Saturday.

Ethiopia has reportedly also shut down the internet in order to stop the protests from spreading to other parts of the country. Hundessa was reportedly a very popular voice in a wave of protests that led to the downfall of the previous prime minister in 2018.
