Sivio Institute, a national policy watchdog has argued that fighting corruption in Zimbabwe would need new actors.
The institute noted that it was imperative to first prove the extent at which corruption is detrimental to the economy and moral fibre. Said the Institute:
This can’t be done by the political class. We need moral influencers that we can all trust to carry out this assignment. These come in the form of religious leaders, retired politicians, philanthropists and our sports heroes.
When we began the process of nation building in 1980, our heroes were those who had played a valiant role in dismantling colonial oppression. Today’s heroes are a mixture of the super-rich who can’t explain how they got their wealth.
Sivio Institute added that although it is good that the government was naming and shaming corrupt individuals, other players including journalists had neglecting their duty of exposing corruption.
This is being said when Zimbabwe has been ranked among countries with the highest corruption globally.
As almost all Auditor General’s reports indicate, the country has institutionalised and systemic corruption which has for years been robbing the nation a chance to transform into a better economy.
Some members of the Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission, particularly the previous team, which have been accused of accepting kickbacks so that corruption cases can be thrown away.
