Zupco To Get 47 More Buses This Week

Zimbabwe United Passager Company will this week receive an additional 47 Busses. The addition will see ZUPCO increasing its fleet to 427. Speaking to Sunday News one government official Hon July Moyo said:

We have bought 47 buses from China and South Africa and they are already in (the country) and they will be commissioned very soon.

“In terms of the Belarus buses, we have now come up with a special arrangement where we have sent designs which suit our local terrain and they will send in knocked-down kits, which will be assembled here in Zimbabwe and create employment

The government further wants to also expand the scheme into the rural areas and not end the project in the urban areas only.

We also want to concentrate on the rural areas, which is also President Mnangagwa’s desire. We will continue with the urban areas, but we want to concentrate on the rural areas.

ZUPCO has been ferrying people from residential areas into town for a subsidised fee of 50cents per head whilst combies are charging up to $2 for the same trip. The busses were introduced after the January protests that came after a sharp fuel increase from $1.33 to $3.31.
