Former Minister of Education David Coltart has decried the emergence of a number of small political parties as this only serves to benefit the ruling Zanu-PF. There are currently more than 50 political parties in Zimbabwe. Coltart said the parties do not have anything new to offer to justify their existence, apart from feeding the egos of the leaders. Numerous political parties will result in confusion and discontent between the parties themselves, something which will benefit Zanu-PF.
Said Coltart:
Zimbabwe is suffering from a political disease, where every man and his dog wants to form a political party and be president.
…This works in the favour of ZANU PF because it already has an advantage of what I term state capture. The capture of state institution the fact that the police support ZANU PF, the court and Zimbabwe BroadcastCorporation.
So when you have one political party that has so much benefit from state resources against a plethora of opposition parties, that plethora of parties can only work to the benefit of ZANU PF.
