Harare City Council says that it close down businesses and organisations that are operating illegally.
It gave such institutions until June 30 to engage the city’s works department to regularise their operations or risk closure.
The institutions include churches, hotels, universities, restaurants, beer halls, sports clubs among others.
In an interview with the Daily News, Harare City Council Spokesperson Michael Chideme said:
In terms of section 9 of the Harare (African Township) By-Laws of 1979, it is illegal to operate without Certificates of Place of Assembly hence they must take this opportunity to regularise their workplaces.
Council has urged the owners of the institutions to engage the city’s works department before 30 June with a view to regularise their operations or risk having their businesses or churches being closed.
The list of those to be closed includes halls, colleges, schools, cinemas, beer halls and sports clubs.
Council director of works Zvenyika Chawatama said that they have been inundated with complaints about noise from churches, bars, among other institutions.
He warned that within the next two months, the council will close down or fine institutions that remain non-compliant to city by-laws.
