Opposition Revives Demand For Missing Dzamara’s Whereabouts

Willias Madzimure, opposition MP has revived demands for the whereabouts of the missing journalist-cum-activist Itai Dzamara. Madzimure yesterday challenged Home Affairs minister Cain Mathema or his deputy, Mike Madiro to issue a ministerial statement on the progress by the police in locating Dzamara.

Madzimure argued that progress was essential as it would give closure to Dzamara’s wife Shefra and family. He said:

It is more than five years since Dzamara disappeared and the Home Affairs ministry promised to give an update on his whereabouts.

We have provisions in our statutes that deal with missing persons and it is high time that the Home Affairs minister comes to this House to give a report on the investigations done so far.

If there is need to declare Dzamara dead, then do that so that the family can have closure.”

Dzamara was reportedly abducted by suspected state security agents when he was coming out of a local barber in 2014. He had previously been a staunch critic of former president Robert Mugabe’s government which he accused of violating human rights.

At one point, the police beat him and left him unconscious at Africa Unity Square where he was conducting his stay-in protest against the government.
