Zimbabwean businessman Lawrence Mudzinganyama, 40, appeared before the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where he was granted bail of R15,000.
Mudzinganyama was arrested on Sunday, 20 September 2026, at the Randburg Police Station after an incident at the Vlamo Restaurant in Randburg two weeks ago. He was initially released on a warning on a charge of intimidation.
It is alleged that he entered the ladies’ powder room at the restaurant, demanded to take photographs of one of the women, and threatened three women with violence and death. A video of him intimidating the women has since circulated.
On Thursday, the State brought an application for the court to reconsider his release on a warning and to impose bail in the interest of justice.
Following further investigations, the State has brought additional charges. Mudzinganyama now faces three counts of intimidation, three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, three counts of crimen injuria and one count of fraud.
“The fraud charge relates to an allegation that Mudzinganyama falsely represented himself to the witnesses as the owner of Vlamo Restaurant, despite allegedly knowing that he was not the lawful owner,” said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Magaboke Mahlotlole.
The court ordered that he report once a week to the Randburg Police Station, refrain from directly or indirectly interfering with witnesses, including staff members of Vlamo Restaurant, surrender his passport and any other travel documents to the investigating officer, and not leave Gauteng until the matter is finalised.
The case is expected to return to court on 15 October 2026 for transfer to the regional court.
