Two Zimbabweans were arrested on Saturday after illicit cigarettes worth R2 million were seized in Limpopo, South Africa.
Police in the province intercepted a truck carrying the contraband at the Groblersbrug Port of Entry.
Provincial Police Commissioner Jan Scheepers said: “At Groblersbrug today we confiscated 4,800 cartons of cigarettes to the value of almost R2 million.
“There was a truck; it’s the type that normally conveys coal. We got information from the community and stopped the truck.
“We inspected the truck; the cigarettes were underneath the coal. We arrested two Zimbabwean nationals who were trying to bring those cigarettes into the country.”
The seizure came just hours after local police, in a multi-disciplinary operation, uncovered a drug manufacturing lab in Musina.
Police seized drugs and lab equipment with an estimated street value of R600 million, as well as an undisclosed amount of cash. Five suspects were arrested during that operation.
