The opposition Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) has notified the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) of its intention to hold a peaceful public gathering to oppose the recently passed Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Act.

According to a letter dated 24 July 2026, addressed to the Regulating Authority for Harare Central Police District, the conveners, Mthulisi Hanana, who is the ZAPU secretary-general, and Derek Katsenga, who is the ZAPU vice-president, said the event will be held at Africa Unity Square in the Harare central business district on 31 July 2026 from 10 am to 1 pm.

“The purpose of the gathering is to express opposition to the recent passing of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Act by the Legislature and its promulgation by the Executive,” reads the letter.

“The basis of ZAPU’s opposition is that the Amendments ought to have, in the view of ZAPU, first been submitted to a referendum in terms of section 328 of the Constitution and that the Amendment undermine rights enshrined in the Constitution of Zimbabwe, including section 67 which enshrines political rights as fundamental rights.”

Various civic groups, opposition factions, churches and war veterans have called for peaceful protests on 31 July 2026 to oppose the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Act, 2026.

The Act, passed by Parliament in June 2026 and assented to by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on 7 July 2026, is the most sweeping change to the 2013 Constitution since its adoption.

South African March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma has publicly backed the planned 31 July nationwide demonstrations.
