TelOne Football Club has confirmed the appointment of the vastly experienced Saul Chaminuka as their new head coach.
Chaminuka succeeds Herbert Maruwa, who parted ways with the Castle Lager Premiership outfit last week.
Having officially taken the reins on 1 May, Chaminuka faces the immediate and formidable challenge of preserving the club’s top-flight status and navigating it clear of the relegation zone.
“TelOne Football Club is delighted to officially announce the appointment of Saul Chaminuka as our new Head Coach, effective immediately,” read a club statement.
“A veteran of the game, Chaminuka joins the WiFi Boys with a wealth of experience and a proven track record of tactical excellence.
“His appointment signals the club’s commitment to stabilising our current campaign and building a competitive squad capable of challenging the elite in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.”
The “WiFi Boys” currently languish in 16th place, having secured just six points from their opening ten fixtures.
However, they head into the weekend with renewed optimism after clinching their first victory of the campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Triangle at Gibbo Stadium.
Chaminuka’s tenure begins with a high-stakes Midlands derby on Saturday, as his side travels to Ascot to face an in-form Hardrock.
A true veteran of the domestic game, Chaminuka brings a vast breadth of experience to the Gweru-based outfit, having previously held the reins at several clubs, including Buffaloes, Black Rhinos, ZPC Kariba, GreenFuel, Kwekwe United, and Dynamos.
His recent career has been somewhat turbulent; after starting last season with Kwekwe United, he departed in May following a disagreement with the club’s hierarchy.
He was swiftly appointed by Dynamos to succeed Lloyd “Ma Blanyo” Chigowe, yet his stay in the capital lasted a mere two months.
His tenure at the Harare giants ended abruptly in July when he was suspended by the executive, following allegations that he incited the abandonment of a league match against FC Platinum by ordering his players off the pitch in protest against a penalty decision.
