A 22-year-old Zimbabwean student has died in India after succumbing to injuries sustained in a mob assault in Punjab’s Bathinda district earlier this month.

The student, Ziweya Leeroy, was attacked on 13 August by a group of nine men, including a security guard at Guru Kashi University, where he was studying.

He passed away on Thursday, 21 August, at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bathinda, after battling for his life for eight days.

According to police, the violence stemmed from an altercation the previous day. On 12 August, security guard Dilpreet Singh reportedly confronted Leeroy after discovering a baseball bat in his car.

The next day, Singh, accompanied by eight others, allegedly ambushed Leeroy outside the university, beating him with sticks and leaving him critically injured.

Leeroy, who had been pursuing a BSc in Radiology and Imaging Technology at Guru Kashi University since 2023, suffered severe head injuries in the attack.

Police initially registered a case of attempted murder along with charges of unlawful assembly, rioting, and voluntarily causing hurt.

Following Leeroy’s death, investigators confirmed that a murder charge has been added.

So far, seven of the nine accused have been arrested, while the search continues for the remaining suspects. Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal said:

“Seven persons have been arrested, and efforts are being made to arrest two more persons, who are suspected to be associated with the attack.

“The section pertaining to murder has been added to the already registered case. Further investigations are being made.”
