Zimbabwe’s Cabinet has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zambia to facilitate the development of a new pipeline system to transport refined petroleum products and natural gas from Zimbabwe to its northern neighbour.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere announced the Cabinet’s decision during a post-Cabinet media briefing on Tuesday.
The agreement is set to streamline energy transportation between the two Southern African nations.
Muswere said the initiative leverages Zimbabwe’s existing capacity for oil and gas storage, processing, and transportation infrastructure. This will be coupled with Zambia’s growing demand for affordable and efficient energy.
He added that the key benefit of the new pipeline system is the expected reduction in the number of fuel tankers on the roads.
This move is anticipated to significantly decrease damage to road infrastructure, contributing to better road maintenance and safety across the transport corridor. Said Muswere:
Transporting fuel to Zambia by pipeline is expected to take fuel tankers off the roads, thereby reducing damage to road infrastructure.
