Allen Nadin Tungamira, a lower sixth pupil from Cheziya High School in Gokwe, has earned national recognition by securing a bronze medal at the Africa Schools International Chess Championships.
Following his success at the tournament held last week in Mombasa, Kenya, school head Tongesai Munyere expressed immense pride, telling the Masvingo Mirror that the school is elated and remains committed to nurturing its students’ talents. Said Munyere:
We are happy with our pupil’s sterling performance. Scooping third place continentally is a major milestone. We are proud of him and want to thank all stakeholders for urging us on. The school funded the trip.
Coach Blessing Jemani, who accompanied the young champion to Kenya, praised Tungamira as a hardworking student whose victory has put Cheziya High School on the international map.
Tungamira offered encouragement to his peers, urging them to believe in themselves as the first step toward achieving their own dreams. He said:
It was my first international tournament, and it made me a good player. The level of competition was high. I challenge other pupils to work towards achieving their dreams.
Cheziya High School has participated in several regional and international chess tournaments, including events in Italy (2023) and Botswana (2024).
The school is now preparing to compete in the World Youth Chess Championships in Washington, D.C., as well as two additional tournaments scheduled to take place in Albania and Colombia later this year.
