Former Minister Joel Gabbuza Transferred To Mpilo Hospital After Being Stabbed Over Alleged Affair

Joel Gabbuza, a former Zimbabwean Minister and long-serving Member of Parliament for Binga South, is in critical condition at Mpilo Central Hospital after being violently attacked in Tinde, Kamativi last Friday.

The assault allegedly occurred after Gabbuza was found in a compromising situation with a married woman at a homestead in Siamakwa village.

According to villagers who spoke with local media, Gabbuza gave the woman a lift and subsequently chose to spend the night at her home.

In the early hours of Friday morning, two men, reported to be the woman’s estranged husband and a relative, stormed the house allegedly armed with knives.

During the attack, Gabbuza suffered multiple severe stab wounds, particularly to his head and hands.

He was first rushed to Hwange Colliery Hospital, but due to the gravity of his injuries, he was transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo for specialist treatment, where he remains in a critical state.

Gabbuza is a prominent political figure in the Matabeleland North province with a career spanning over two decades.

A former trusted lieutenant of the late Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, he served as the Minister of Water Resources and Development during the Government of National Unity.

First elected to Parliament in 2000 under the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) banner, Gabbuza represented the Binga constituency.

He successfully retained his seat for Binga South in subsequent elections following constituency boundary changes.

His 23-year tenure as a legislator ended in October 2023 after he was recalled from Parliament by the self-styled Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) interim secretary general, Sengezo Tshabangu.
