Former Minister Joel Gabbuza Hospitalised After Axe Attack

Joel Gabbuza, the former Minister and Member of Parliament for Binga South, is receiving treatment at Hwange Colliery Hospital following a violent attack.

Reports indicate that Gabbuza was assaulted with an axe by a man who suspected him of having an affair with his wife.

In a brief telephone interview with CITE, Gabbuza’s son confirmed that his father is alive and receiving medical care. He said:

He is receiving treatment at Hwange Colliery Hospital. His condition has improved from last night, he is now able to speak. We are making arrangements to transfer him to Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo.

Gabbuza served as Zimbabwe’s Minister of Water Resources and Development during the Government of National Unity and was a long-standing Member of Parliament for Binga South.

He first entered Parliament in 2000, representing the Binga constituency under the banner of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

Following the 2008 electoral boundary adjustments that split Binga into Binga North and Binga South, Gabbuza continued as the MP for Binga South.

He successfully retained his seat in subsequent elections, including the 2013 general elections, and served in Parliament for approximately 23 years.

His tenure came to an end in October 2023, following his recall by the self-styled Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) interim secretary general, Sengezo Tshabangu.
