US$280,000 Stolen From Home In Harare’s Madokero Suburb

Police are investigating a major theft in the Madokero suburb of Harare. A 39-year-old man lost a staggering US$280,000 in cash following an unlawful entry into his home.

According to a statement issued by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the incident occurred on May 30, 2025.

An unidentified suspect reportedly broke into the victim’s house and made off with a small bag containing the large sum of money, which had been stashed in a wardrobe inside the bedroom. The police said:

The ZRP is investigating a case of Unlawful entry into premises and theft that occurred in Madokero, Harare, on 30/05/25. A 39-year-old man lost US$ 280,000.00 in cash after an unknown suspect broke into his house and stole a small bag containing the money, which was in the wardrobe in his bedroom.

Armed robberies and large-scale thefts have been on the rise in Zimbabwe in recent years, driven in part by a growing trend among businesspeople to keep large sums of money at home. This shift stems from concerns over currency instability and unpredictable policy changes.

Many Zimbabweans now prefer to hold their savings in US dollars or other stable foreign currencies, rather than keeping their money in local banks.

This reluctance is largely rooted in past financial crises, where government interventions resulted in the loss of personal savings.

As a result, trust in the banking system remains low, prompting many to avoid formal financial institutions altogether.
