Victims Of Kwekwe Road Accident And Chegutu Mine Disaster Identified

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has released the names of the remaining four of the twelve victims who died in an accident that occurred near the Sebakwe River in Kwekwe on 27 May 2025.

The accident, which occurred at the 200-kilometre peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Road, involved a petrol tanker with two trailers, a two-tonne truck, and a Nissan AD Van carrying 12 occupants.

The tanker first struck the two-tonne truck before colliding head-on with the AD Van, dragging it for several metres before overturning and falling on top of it.

The victims were identified by their next of kin as listed:

  • Sarudzai Moramasaka (26), a female adult of Alarm 2 Compound Kwekwe.
  • Beauty Mudereki (52), a female adult of Sherwood, Kwekwe.
  • Violet Juja (40), a female adult of Mbizo, Kwekwe.
  • Henly Mutambara (34), a male adult of Mbizo, Kwekwe.

Meanwhile, in Chegutu, four artisanal miners tragically lost their lives after being trapped in an open pit at Pickstone Mine on 27 May 2025.

The victims were identified by their next of kin as listed:

  • Cephas Chiweshe (21), a male adult of plot 7, Carton Farm, Kadoma.
  • Costain Mashayamhara (17), a male juvenile of Carton Farm, Kadoma.
  • Thulani Chitembetembe (18), a male adult of plot 7, Carton Farm, Kadoma.
  • Simbarashe Rondo (26), a male adult of Pickstone, Chegutu.

ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Ngwarai Nyathi said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police extends deepest condolences to the families of the victims in connection with these tragic accidents. We appeal to the public to seriously consider safety on the roads and in mining activities.
