Four artisanal miners perished in a tragic accident at Pickstone Mine in Chegutu on Tuesday. The miners were trapped in an open pit.
One other miner sustained injuries in the incident and is currently receiving treatment at Chegutu Hospital, where the bodies of the deceased were also taken for post-mortem examinations. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the accident.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, Police in Marondera arrested 27-year-old Emanuel Kapondo in connection with an armed robbery at a supermarket on Main Street.
Kapondo and his accomplice, identified only as Tinashe Mhofu, allegedly assaulted the supermarket employee and stole their handbag before fleeing the scene.
A swift response by the robbery victim’s colleague, assisted by members of the public, led to Kapondo’s arrest. Police have recovered the pistol used in the crime.
